Airlines Are Taking Precautions Beyond FAA Restrictions After MH17 Crash

Baghdad-airport

The Federal Aviation Administration announced mandatory restrictions on U.S. airlines flying over Iraq late on Thursday, citing "the potentially hazardous situation created by armed conflict." Carriers are restricted from flying at or below 30,000 feet in the country, an increase from a previous restriction from flying at or below 20,000 feet.

International airlines had already begun rerouting flights to avoid Iraqi airspace, and many U.S. carriers have also developed alternate routes to avoid the country altogether. Iraqi officials have said it is safe to fly over.

'The Killing' Season 4 Premiere Recap: Dead But Not Buried

Thekillingmainfixed

The grisly murder of a wealthy family kicks off Season 4 of The Killing, a show that knows a thing or two about what it's like to be killed but has, thankfully, found a home at Netflix for what's likely to be its final season.

Normally, a new case would wipe the slate clean for Linden (Mireille Enos) and Holder (Joel Kinnaman), but they enter this particular crime scene barely able to mask the tension between them. Only hours before reporting to the giant glass house now full of bodies, Holder was disposing of Lt. Skinner's (Elias Koteas) remains and Linden was washing blood out of her hair

"No one's gotta know what we did," he tells her. But something tells us it's not going to be that easy. Read more...

Apple's iPhone 6 Will Supposedly Ship a Month Later. So What?

Apple-iphone-5-event-66

Apple's alleged plans to bring two iPhone 6 models to market in September may have hit a snagMacRumors reports that the company now plans to ship the new iPhones in October, along with other unnamed products. It could mean a busy month, but it's unlikely the shift will have any impact on Apple's retail success or failure.

The report cited the new go date as Oct. 14, quoting a source who referenced a "senior Apple Store leader."

Last year, Apple announced the iPhone 5S and 5C on Sept. 10 and was selling and shipping the devices to customers before the end of the month. Read more...

HP Taps Fashion's Elite to Create a Luxury Smartwatch With Gilt

Hp-luxury-smartwatch

If you've browsed the current crop of smartwatches, you've probably found the array of rectangular slabs available to be a little lacking in the aesthetics department. HP is looking to change that, with a little help from the fashion industry.

HP is partnering with Gilt, a designer retail site, to bring to market a luxury smartwatch. The two have tapped designer Michael Bastian to create the device, and judging from the first renderings, it's going to be a beauty.

Similar to the much-lauded Moto 360, the Michael Bastian smartwatch features a round watch face, which is step No. 1 for any smartwatch that aims to be fashionable. Bastian also comes right out and decrees that this is a men's watch (something many smartwatches already are by default) with such masculine accoutrements as a 44mm stainless steel case and inlaid button controls on the bezel. App Marketing Costs Reach All-Time High

App_marketing

The cost of app marketing is at an all-time high, according to app marketing technology company Fiksu.

Boston-based Fiksu has been analyzing trends in app marketing for the last four years, and in June of this year, the Cost Per Loyal User Index (CPLUI) — which measures how much money brands spend to acquire regular users of their iOS apps — peaked at $2.23. According to Fiksu, a regular user is someone who uses the app at least three times.

The data suggests there's a correlation between the cost of marketing and the App Store Competitive Index, which tracks the aggregate volume of downloads for the 200 most popular free iPhone apps. The more people that download the app, the higher its rank in the App Store. This gives the app more visibility and more downloads, which in turn results in a lower marketing cost. Read more...
