SYDNEY — In an unprecedented move, the University of Sydney has suspended further investment in the Australian coal mining industry.
"The university has issued an instruction to its Australian equities managers to make no further investments in the coal and consumable fuels subsector of the ASX," a University spokesperson said in a statement to the Sydney Morning Herald, without detailing the reasoning behind the decision
It followed an earlier halt of stock purchases by the university with the company Whitehaven Coal, who is behind the controversial Maules Creek coal mine in New South Wales. Read more...
