As the FCC moves to lift its ban on in-flight cellphone use, a ban that has been in place for more than 20 years, the Department of Transportation (DOT) is preparing to step in and lay down the law.
Airlines, meanwhile, argue that the decision for in-flight phone use should be left up to them.
This ongoing battle over could be moot, however, as the idea of voice calls in the air is wildly unpopular among the public.
Since 1991, the FCC has banned in-flight calls in fear of interference with communication networks, although studies on the potential for interference have not provided definitive evidence of a problem. The ban was therefore likely precautionary, and in addition, there is now technology that can be installed on airplanes to prevent such interference, according to the FCC. Read more...
