For fans of surround sound, the rise of the soundbar has been a scourge. The idea of consolidating all of your speakers (subwoofer excepted) into one location — while certainly convenient — is an anathema to anyone who values being immersed in sound, rather than separated from it.
Most soundbars deal with the immersion problem through fancy sound-processing algorithms that simulate surround sound. To really hear those bullets-whizzing-by effects, though, nothing beats having real, physical speakers off to either side.
