Amid a tumultuous week for Bitcoin, one member of the U.S. Senate is calling for an all-out ban on the world's most popular digital cryptocurrency.
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) called out Bitcoin for its connections to illicit online transactions and its volatile fluctuations in value in a letter he sent to Treasury Secretary Jack Lew, Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen and other federal financial regulators. He sent the letter just one day after one of the most popular Bitcoin exchanges, Mt. Gox, went offline, and about $350 million worth of its customers' bitcoins disappeared due to a supposed glitch.
