Study: Jolts of Electricity to the Brain Can Improve Memory

A new study from Northwestern University suggests that a non-invasive electrical current to the brain can improve an individual's memory.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS, is a noninvasive procedure that sends low-level electric current to a region of the brain just under the skull, which is connected to the hippocampus.

The study showed that remembering things requires several regions of the brain to cooperate with the hippocampus. Zapping the area helps it coordinate with those discrete regions.

According to the researchers, this is the same way that sections of a symphony orchestra play together. Jolting the hippocampus with electricity is like bringing in a more coordinated conductor for that symphony. Read more...
